What does it take to be a Career Firefighter?
- Must be 21 Years of Age.
- High School Diploma – College is a Plus!
- Clean Driver License & Criminal Record.
- Must be in good physical shape.
- Pass the written NYS Firefighter Civil Service Exam for Ontario County.
- Pass a NYS Civil Service Physical Agility Exam for Ontario County.
- Panel Oral Interview. This interview will determine if you move forward in the process.
- Criminal Background Investigation.
- Medical Exam / Drug Test.
- City Manager / Chief Approval
If selected as a recruit firefighter
- Must pass the NYS Recruit Firefighter Training Program (RFFT) 12– 15 Weeks (~500 hours of training)
- 16 Weeks Field Training with the Department.
- Must be an NYS Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) within a year of hire.
(Preference to those who possess the NYS EMT or Paramedic license before date of hire)
- 1 Year Probation with the City and NYS Civil Service.
